Infrastructure Enhancements
In response to the city’s expansion, Mayor Omar Ochoa announced a $275 million capital improvement plan over the next four years. This initiative focuses on upgrading sewer systems, enhancing drainage, expanding roads, and investing in the airport to support future growth. Mayor Ochoa emphasized that this plan serves as a blueprint for achieving the American dream in Edinburg.
Additionally, the city is investing over $27 million to upgrade the wastewater treatment plant, addressing residents’ concerns about odors and increasing the facility’s capacity to accommodate the growing population.
Community Development
To support workforce development, the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation proposed a $7.1 million workforce resource center. This 12,000-square-foot facility, planned within the Ebony Hills Golf Course, will feature a new golf clubhouse and simulated indoor golf bays on the first floor, with the second floor dedicated to workforce resources.
In an effort to combat food insecurity, the Edinburg Community Fridge initiative provides residents with access to fresh produce and prepared meals. This publicly accessible refrigerator operates 24/7, allowing individuals and businesses to share surplus food, fostering community unity and reducing food waste.
Public Safety and Health
The Edinburg Police Department’s 2024 Annual Report highlighted a 19.5% decrease in crimes such as sexual assault, robbery, assault, and murder over the past four years. However, challenges remain, including motor vehicle theft, which continues to be a concern in South Texas.
To promote health and wellness, the city collaborates with local residents to organize events like the All-America City David Chavana 10K and Fun Run. These initiatives aim to provide barrier-free access to fitness opportunities, addressing health concerns such as diabetes and obesity prevalent in the community.
